Signs That the Chip on Your Windshield Is More Serious Than You Would Expect

It’s not that uncommon to get a small chip on your windshield. While annoying, it’s certainly not something about which you’ll need to worry. There are, however, some chips that are a little more serious. Below are a few signs that the chip on your windshield is more serious than you might expect.

It’s Getting Bigger

One of the surest signs that your chip needs to be taken seriously is that it’s starting to grow. A small chip isn’t necessarily much of a problem and can probably be filled in; once the chip gets past a certain size, though, you’re looking at a more serious issue. If you’ve noticed that the chip in your windshield is bigger across than a half-dollar, you’ll want to get it checked out as soon as you can.

It’s Close to Another Chip

It’s also a good idea to think about where your chip is located. If the chip is located near another chip, you’re not only going to have to worry about the two combining to become a bigger issue but you’ll also need to stop and worry about the overall integrity of your windshield. If a chip is less than a few inches away from any other kind of damage to your windshield, you’ll need to have it checked out.

You’ve Already Tried to Repair the Chip

It’s relatively easy to get a chip repaired. If it isn’t done right, though, you might be left with a fairly large issue. If you’ve already tried to get your chip repaired and you’re noticing damage in the same spot, you’re probably not going to be able to get that damage filled in again. Recurring issues definitely mean that there’s a more serious problem that needs to be investigated.

When to Look at Windshield Replacement

Any of the signs discussed here are serious, but it’s vital that you know the difference between a windshield that needs to be repaired and one that needs windshield replacement. Though the size of the crack certainly matters, it’s best to speak to a professional so you can determine whether your next step is going to involve fully replacing your windshield or if you’ll be able to get away with simply having the chip filled in.

Always keep an eye on the damage to your windshield. Even a small chip can lead to bigger problems, so don’t ignore the chip for too long. Remember, windshield damage can often be repaired if caught early enough so don’t be afraid to take your car to a professional if you fear the seriousness of a chip.
